How can exploring one significant tree in the playground help children develop ecological literacy, empathy and compassion for living things?

Through observation, discussion, research and hands on experience, children formed a deep connection with a large tree in the school environment and as a result connected with the creatures that lived within it. They explored whether trees have feelings, concluding that all living things deserve care and respect. Using multiple languages, (drawing, painting, and photography) children represented the tree. They learned more about the ants and other insects living in the ecosystem of the tree and curiosity replaced feelings of fear as understanding of these living things grew. As the project concluded, children regarded the tree as an important member of our community, expressing gratitude and appreciation through heartfelt messages of appreciation.
