Children’s Narratives with Non-human Entities

This project unfolded through children’s growing fascination with birds and the natural world around them. Through observation, research, drawing, storytelling and collaborative meaning-making, children were invited to slow down, notice details and make connections between what they already knew and what they were discovering. Visual prompts and shared conversations supported children to develop theories, ask questions and deepen their understanding of the lives of birds.

As the project evolved, children strengthened their eco-literacies by building knowledge, empathy and connection with the living creatures that share our local environment. They began to recognise birds as important members of a shared ecosystem, each playing a role in the health and balance of the natural world.

This inquiry nurtured curiosity, wonder and deeper thinking while encouraging children to consider the relationships that exist between humans, birds and the more-than-human world, and our shared responsibility to care for the places and species with whom we live together.
