The Big Tree

Naarm 📍

Through observation, discussion, research, and hands-on experiences, the children formed a deep connection with a large tree within the school environment and, as a result, developed relationships with the creatures that lived within and around it. They explored whether trees have feelings, concluding that all living things deserve care and respect.

Using multiple languages, including drawing, painting, and photography, the children represented and shared their understandings of the tree. They learnt more about the ants and other insects living within the tree’s ecosystem, with curiosity replacing feelings of fear as their knowledge and understanding of these living beings grew.

As the project concluded, the children came to regard the tree as an important member of their community, expressing gratitude and appreciation through heartfelt messages of care.
